Alumnae Affiliation Program
For many years, Alpha Sigma Tau has had an alumnae affiliation program. Any woman with one year of college credit who is not a member of another NPC sorority is eligible to join as an alumna affiliate. Click here to recommend a candidate for alumnae affiliation.
The candidate for membership should complete the Application for Alumnae Affiliate Membership and return it to the collegiate chapter president or alumnae association president.
The chapter president or another officer writes a letter of recommendation and sends the letter and the Application for Alumnae Affiliate Membership to the Alumnae Affiliation Chairman by email or by mail to the Alpha Sigma Tau National Headquarters.
The Alumnae Affiliation Chairman will review the application packet including the application and the letter of recommendation to make sure it is filled out correctly. Once it has been reviewed and deemed completed, the Alumnae Affiliation Chairman will forward the packet to the National President.
The National President will review the packet request and notify the chapter and the alumnae affiliate candidate in writing of her decision. (At this time, the National President circulates a ballot to the National Council to seek approval to initiate the alumnae affiliate candidate, if the candidate is not an alumna of a local sorority that became a collegiate colony/chapter of the sorority.) If approval is granted, the National President will notify the parties who requested the decision. Please allow up to four weeks for the review and approval process. Copies of the letter will be sent to the following:
- National Headquarters
- Alumnae Affiliation Chairman
- Director of Alumnae
- Collegiate chapter with whom alumna member wishes to affiliate
- Alumnae association if the woman is being inducted into one
Upon receipt of the National President's approval, the candidate for membership should forward her $75 alumnae affiliation fee to the treasurer of the Chapter and/or Alumnae Association she will be affiliating with. She should also review the different sorority badge options available to her and purchase the gold badge at a minimum. Checks should be made payable to Alpha Sigma Tau; please indicate alumnae affiliation on the memo line of the check.
The chapter/association treasurer will forward all financial obligations, including the alumnae affiliation fee and the badge fee, and the completed Alumnae Affiliation Form to National Headquarters. Checks should be made payable to Alpha Sigma Tau; please indicate alumnae affiliation on the memo line of the check.
Once the candidate is initiated, Headquarters shall send a letter from the Director of Alumnae and an affiliation packet to the affiliate candidate. This packet will include:
- The most recent copy of THE ANCHOR and THE CREST
- Crest decal
- Alpha Sigma Tau refrigerator magnet
- Pine Mountain Settlement School brochure
- Alpha Sigma Tau National Foundation, Inc. information
- Jewelry and gift brochures
- Information for Alumnae Affiliates
- Resources for alumnae handout
The Alumnae Affiliation Chairman will be responsible for following up on the initiation of the alumnae affiliate candidate and preparing a summary of the candidate for publicity purposes.
Collegiate chapters may initiate women as alumnae affiliates at a regularly scheduled initiation ceremony, or they may schedule a special ceremony. In any case, the initiation should be held within 2 months of receipt of the National President's approval. The alumnae affiliation initiation ceremony can be found in the Ritual Book. The collegiate chapter must submit the Initiation List to the National Headquarters at least 4 weeks prior to the initiation ceremony and then submit the Record of Initiates to National Headquarters. Please make a notation that the candidate is an alumna affiliate.
Alumnae associations sponsoring an alumna affiliate should also hold an initiation within two months of receiving the National President's approval. The alumnae association should contact the collegiate chapter with whom the alumnae affiliate candidate has chosen to affiliate for the original of the last page of initiates from the Ritual Book. This request should be made to the collegiate chapter at least 3-4 weeks prior to the initiation date. The collegiate chapter must keep a copy of the last page of the initiates until the original page is returned from the alumnae association. The alumnae association should contact the National Headquarters to request initiation supplies for the ceremony, providing at least 3-4 weeks notice. The National Headquarters has a listing of the supplies to be sent.
Alumnae associations should follow the initiation procedures in their Ritual Book. The alumnae association shall be responsible for returning the original signature page from the Ritual Book to the collegiate chapter and returning the ritual supplies to the National Headquarters within 3-5 days of the initiation ceremony.
The alumnae association should submit the Records of Inductees form to the National Headquarters when the ritual supplies are returned to the National Headquarters, with a notation of that the candidate was initiated on the same date. The collegiate chapter shall be responsible for refilling the signature page of initiates into the Ritual Book immediately.
We encourage collegiate chapters and alumnae associations to give the candidate a copy of the New Member Manual from National Headquarters prior to her initiation so she can learn about Alpha Sigma Tau. It is also a nice gesture to give the affiliate an initiation present of gift items.
