Basic Expectations of Advisers
While developing this guide, we have looked outside of Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority to bring in new perspectives, and we encourage you to do the same. The Association of Fraternity Advisers (AFA) is the association developed for Greek Advisors. Established in 1976, AFA holds its annual meeting each December with the North-American Interfraternity Conference, the fraternal counterpart to the National Panhellenic Conference. Alpha Sigma Tau has representatives at AFA who participate in meetings with Greek Advisors and attend educational seminars.
In the AFA Chapter Advisors Manual, AFA outlines nine basic expectations for Chapter Advisers:
- Communicate with the chapter, with the administration, and with the National Organization.
- Lead with integrity by following the "do as I do" philosophy.
- Be present by attending and participating in chapter meetings and events to develop and sustain your relationship.
- Be respectful of the chapter and campus culture by asking questions about how and why "we do the things we do here."
- Get information on your organization's liability insurance to cover you as an adviser. Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority has director's and officer's insurance for advisers through MJ Insurance, the largest insurance provider for national sororities.
- Know the rules and keep governing documents at hand by reading the National and local governing documents and using them to educate the leadership and membership.
- Know the goal of being an adviser: helping the chapter and each member to be accountable for their actions, to be self-reliant, and to be self-determining.
- Know the responsibilities and each member of the advisory team and the Collegiate-Alumnae Advisory Board.
- Help the chapter plan long-term for the future and meet annual goals.
- Help the chapter meet their Chapter Excellence Program (CEP) requirements.
