Scholarship

Alpha Sigma Tau members are challenged to strive to achieve their highest academic potential by focusing on academic achievement through incentive programs, study programs, time management education, recognition both within the chapter and National Convention, tutorial assistance, and suggestions for the promotion of chapter scholarship. Intellectual development and academic success are the primary reasons for attending an institution of higher education.

Throughout Alpha Sigma Tau's rich history and the legacy of our ritual, we have been bound to our Founders' desire for high standard of "true scholarship." Academic achievement affects many areas of Sorority life. Strong scholarship is tied to strong chapter achievement and increased recruitment. Chapter members who promote such high achievement succeed in life.

Invitation to membership in Alpha Sigma Tau is based in part on high academic performance; therefore, the National Organization has established academic benchmarks for potential new members to attain prior to being offered membership in the Sorority.

  • A potential new member who is a first semester freshman must be a fully matriculating student who graduated in the upper third of her high school class prior to the determination of a collegiate cumulative grade point average.
  • Potential new members who have completed one semester/term of their college curriculum must be fully matriculating students and have a minimum of a 2.5 collegiate cumulative grade point average to be considered for membership.
  • Each initiated member must maintain a 2.5 collegiate cumulative grade point average to maintain all of the rights and privileges of good standing in the Sorority through out her academic career.
  • While a 2.5 is our national standard, many of our chapters have chosen to raise their academic requirement to a 2.6 or a 2.7!

Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority honors chapters and individuals with high academic achievement with several national awards:

  • The Order of the Open Book honors individual members who in their junior, senior, or graduate work have obtained a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average.
  • The Scholarship Cup is annually given to collegiate chapters in good standing having the highest scholastic average.
  • The 4.0 Award is presented by the National Academics Coordinator to each collegiate member in good standing maintaining an annual 4.0 grade point average.

Alpha Sigma Tau has developed Academic Tips of the Week for chapter vice-presidents to review with members at each chapter business meeting. In addition, the Sorority makes The Scholar, Gamma Sigma Alpha's newsletter, available to members.

The Alpha Sigma Tau National Foundation provides collegiate and alumnae members of the Sorority with the opportunity to apply for over 30 academic scholarships to support their educational endeavors. Each year more scholarships are funded by the Sorority, chapter alumnae, and individual members to assist our members. Many of our collegiate chapters also have scholarships through their college or university foundations for which members may apply.
