Michelle Cary, Psi ’02, was drawn to Alpha Sigma Tau was the diversity of the type of woman within the Chapter as well as the way in which they were so genuine about their love for the organization and their respect for each other. During recruitment, the ladies of Alpha Sigma Tau both made her feel comfortable, made her laugh and made her want to be a better person and friend.

Michelle truly believes that Alpha Sigma Tau helped to shape her entire college experience.  Thanks to the relationships that made in the organization and the values it instilled, it continues to shape her post-college life. Throughout college, AST provided a supportive environment to try new experience and share new ideas, a platform for leadership and philanthropic opportunities, and exposure to a diverse group of people and personalities and beliefs.

Michelle’s tenure as Philanthropy Chair definitely reaffirmed her desire to work in the field of non-profit as well as made her more marketable to employers when interviewing. The responsibilities that came with the chair position prepared her for the event planning and committee coordination which her current professional role requires.  It also exposed her to a variety of non-profit organizations allowing her to narrow down what type of work interested her.

Currently a Senior Event Marketing Representative for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital based out of the New York City office, she plans and executes special events and national programs to raise money for and awareness of the St. Jude mission as well as acquire new donors and volunteers.

When talking about the big picture, the money raised through her position funds both the cancer research done at St. Jude as well as assists in providing free treatment to patients and their families. Aside from the monetary impact to support the organization’s mission, many of the programs implemented provide leadership and philanthropic opportunities to college and high school students as well as allows individuals an outlet for giving back.

In her personal life, Michelle recently completed her first marathon.  Her initial exposure to the world of marathons was through sorority sisters involvement in the sport.  It wasn’t until she learned about the St. Jude Heroes program (a program for individuals to raise money for St. Jude while training for an endurance event) that she decided to start training for an actual marathon event myself, knowing that there was an inspiration and cause greater than my own determination for which to work towards.
