National Convention

Purpose of National Conventions

Alpha Sigma Tau holds national conventions, typically every two years, to conduct Sorority business, provide an outlet for social activities and networking, recognize chapter and individual achievement, and provide valuable educational and leadership training for its membership.

Awards and Recognition

Each National Convention celebrates the Yellow Rose Banquet to honor annual and biennial accomplishments among individuals and chapters, collegians and alumnae. Additionally, the Sorority acknowledges the devotion of its membership by recognizing milestone anniversaries in chapter establishment, individual membership, and individual Convention attendance. One award decided during the National Convention is the Mary Charles Adams Ashby Convention Top Tau Award, presented to sisters who have enthusiastically exemplified Sorority ideals during the Convention. Typically, this award is bestowed upon one collegian and one alumna per Convention, although there have been exceptions. For example, in 2008, the alumna award was earned by both Sally Belknap of the Alpha Chapter and Kristin Walker of the Alpha Lambda Chapter.

Please see Awards and Recognition for a description of all awards.

Convention 2010

‘Can Warm Weather Arrive? It will for Convention 2010!’

The winter blues have you and your chapter down? Don’t worry, before you all realize, it will be time pack your sunglasses for our 2010 Convention!

Many of you are aware the theme for Convention is ‘Sailing into Excellence,’ as well as the location of convention is in Birmingham, Alabama; but we wanted to cover a few questions you and your chapter may have!

1. When should our chapter arrive for convention?

The official dates for convention are Wednesday, June 23 through Sunday, June 27. We are asking chapters arrive in Birmingham no later than 12 noon. Since festivities end late Saturday night, chapters are free to leave on anytime on Sunday, but since check-out time for the hotel is 12 noon, we encourage a morning departure.

2. When will registration open/close?

Registration will open for all delegates mid-March. Please set aside 15 minutes for registration on-line. We ask all register for convention by May 10th.

3. What is the official name of the hotel when convention will be held?

The Sheraton-Birmingham.

4. How many chapter members can attend convention?

Four chapter members attend convention. But honestly, we would love to see chapters send as many delegates as possible!

5. Any simple packing tips? What should we bring?

Since we are planning a wonderful ritual ceremony and opening procession, remember to pack your ‘whites’ and your chapter plaque. In addition, pack business attire for 3 days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday), letters/jeans for ‘Island Excursion’ and ‘Philanthropy Excursion,’ and semi-formal/cocktail attire for Yellow Rose Banquet. Since you will be mingling with your sisters, we are encouraging all delegates to bring ‘contact cards.’

6. How can I volunteer for convention?

We are happy to announce our ‘Convention Interns’ program for the 2010 Convention!
