National Hazing Prevention Week

HazingPrevention.org

Alpha Sigma Tau is a sponsor of HazingPrevention.org, a non-profit organization whose mission is "to empower individuals, through collaboration and education, to expect and create groups that value human dignity." Alpha Sigma Tau is proud of the connection to HazingPrevention.org because their mission is closely related to ours: to promote the ethical, cultural, and social development of our members. We are delighted to have a connection to two members serving on the Board of Directors, Lisa Hurwitz, Delta Phi; and David Stollman, Delta Phi Assistant Chapter Adviser.

National Hazing Prevention Week

September 22-26, 2008 is National Hazing Prevention Week, where campuses and organizations across the country will participate in prevention and awareness activities. Alpha Sigma Tau strongly encourages her members to participate in hazing prevention education activities on campus when available.

Now that the semester is underway, many women are now new members of Alpha Sigma Tau. However, do you know everything about these new members' past experiences? Do you know what traumatic memories you could be triggering by hazing someone? The concept of "Hidden Harm" in hazing refers to the fact that many students start college with emotional trauma from their past. Things like past abuse, mental illness or other traumatic events are not things that many people are willing to talk about, especially in the college environment. However, these things are precisely what take a hazing situation from bad to worse. Everyone who experiences any form of hazing (no matter how subtle) has a psychological and emotional reaction to that experience. That reaction is multiplied by the experiences in one's past, and the compounded effects can be disastrous.

Please take a few moments to visit HazingPrevention.org with your sisters. Read the article written by Travis and Ross, and watch video clips from Travis, Ross, and T.J. further discussing the concept of "Hidden Harm."

Alpha Sigma Tau Hazing Policy

All members and new members must be familiar with and are expected to adhere to Alpha Sigma Tau's Hazing Policy. Take a few minutes to read the policy. Discuss with your fellow sisters how this policy is enforced within your chapter.

Hazing Prevention

If any new member, initiated member, alumna, non-member or campus administrator suspects a potential hazing situation with any chapter or colony of Alpha Sigma Tau, she or he is invited to contact the Sorority on our national caller identity-protected anti-hazing hotline at
1-888-NOT-HAZE.
