The Founders

The record of many human institutions is personified in the endeavors of individual women and men - people endowed with positive vision, creative resourcefulness and inspired integrity. The Founders of Alpha Sigma Tau were women who possessed these qualities. It is to them that the present organization is indebted for the vigorous opening pages in the sorority annals.

These eight women who envisioned an idea of sisterhood and constructed its reality were:

Harriett MarxHarriet Marx
Member of Flint Alumnae Chapter until her death in 1965
Eva O'Keefe Eva O’Keefe
Roommate of Harriet Marx on Cross Street in Ypsilanti
Adriance Rice Adriance Rice
Died at a very young age in 1919
Helen M. Rice Helene M. Rice
Sister of Adriance Rice; Chapter President, 1900
Mable Chase
Chapter Secretary, 1900
Ruth Dutcher
No photo was ever found of her; she left school the next year.
May Gephart
Chapter Vice President, 1900
Mayene Tracy
Chapter Treasurer, 1900

Founders' Day

Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority was founded on November 4, 1899.

Each year on November 4, sisters and chapters from all over remember the birth of our Sorority and the dedication of its founders through Founders' Day celebrations!

Presidents of the Past

At the first National Convention of Alpha Sigma Tau in 1925, the first National President was elected by the convention body.  Since then, 12 additional women have accepted the honor of being elected and holding the position of National President.

We invite you to learn more about the women who have guided our Sorority over the years.
